The FAA recently published and Airworthiness Directive on the Cessna 177 Cardinal - AD 2023-02-17. This AD becomes effective March 20, 2023, and covers all the Fixed gear and Retract gear Cardinal fleet. Fillmore Aviation has been performing maintenance on the Cessna Cardinal fleet specifically on the Rear Carry Thru Spar since the Service Letter SEL-57-07 first came out June 2019 and subsequent letter SEL-57-09R1. Since that time we have performed maintenance on 15 cardinal carry thru spars and all have passed the Eddy Current inspection. We have worked closely with NDI Consultants who now have done over 75 Cessna Cardinal spar inspections across the USA.
Proper beam preparation is critical as called out in the Service Letter and is very important to a successful Eddy Current test. SEL-57-09R1 allows for material removal and gives limits on how much can be removed from the spar. If you previously processed the work under SEL-57-07 limits were not given and you may have grounded the aircraft. It may be worth rechecking under SEL-57-09R1. If you have performed the Service letters previously and passed you will get credit on the new AD. Only a report is required to be sent to the FAA.
Since the ceiling panel will be off and you have access don’t forget to replace all of the cabin vent CAT tube with SCAT tube. Also inspect the upper skin interior where the pilot overhead vents connect. The old CAT tube has caused corrosion and has required skin repairs on some aircraft.
Fillmore Aviation has used Spars in stock that have SEL-57-09R1 inspections complete and have passed the Eddy Current test. If you need assistance with your Spar inspection or replacement, contact us for assistance

We had a great time supporting the Delta Care Fund golf outing at Southern Hills Golf Course, Farmington, MN. Fun event and even got to catch up with old friends! To date Fillmore Aviation has donated over $35,000 to MSP Delta Care Fund and is proud to help families in need.
The Delta Care Fund was established to help employees in crisis. It derives its money from employee contributions and a committee of employees makes decisions about giving grants to their colleagues in need.
I had an excellent experience working with Tim at Filmore Aviation for repairs to my Cessna Cardinal carburetor air box, which had been repaired poorly by others previously and was in terrible condition. Tim was veery familiar with the quirks of Cardinals and knew exactly the fix I needed to correct the problem. His service was prompt, his price was reasonable and his workmanship was top notch. I now have a part that might be even better than new and I’m very glad I found this repair service.
